In Spring 2023, PATCHWERK returned to Mercy Center Inc. in the South Bronx, New York, U.S.A for a community craft workshop. We welcomed local immigrant families and they represented Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela. My Family's Quilt embraced family narratives and shared poetic memories. Participating families completed a series of art classes to explore family origin and culture as artists bonded with family members through interviewing and quilting.

 

Families created quilts that portrayed the countries, faces, patterns and poems of relatives from the past and present. As a final project, families presented their handwoven quilts at an art ceremony where they received certificates, cash prizes and art supplies for the family.
